This commission came to me from an architect remodeling his small urban back yard. He had a very clear conception of what he wanted, and even a sketch specifying material, dimensions, finishes, etc. The sketch would have made a fine fire pit. I said it could be fabricated more efficiently by the quarry that supplies the specified granite, and I offered to help find the quarry. After talking with several quarries I gave up and the architect, his interior designer wife and I began a collaboration that brought us to installation of the fire pit shown below. I call this piece 'Paula's Find' for the architect's associate Paula who came along on the trip to Butala's boulder yard and spotted the rock that led us down the design and fabrication path we took.
