I like making functional objects because I believe the user's repeated interaction with the object affords a very different opportunity for the object's message to get through, as compared to the opportunity that arises from placing the object on a pedestal so that all can see it's to be regarded as art. Stone in a metaphor often reads as Earth. So stone lavatories incorporate Earth and Water and offer a rich palette to draw from. Further, we use lavatories in a routine, almost ritual way, and I can't resist building an object that will have such intimate access to the user's psyche.
